What are your winter skincare tips? How do you navigate the colder temperatures?
With shorter days and a chill in the air, you may find that your skin is starting to feel a bit different. The colder weather can have a drying affect, leaving your skin feeling dehydrated and under stress.
The cold and harsh winds can really strip the moisture out of your skin. And in an attempt to get warm again, your indoor heating and hot showers can also contribute to this drying affect, leading to tightness, redness, and even flaky skin.
Luckily, there are a few tips and products that can be a real lifesaver for your poor skin, without having to switch up your entire skincare routine. Our overall focus is going to be on adding moisture back into the skin, but there are few tips within that that we’re going to explore!
Invest in a thick, quality moisturiser
Even if your skin is combination/oily, a thick moisturiser is going to be your best friend throughout winter. It will help replenish the moisture that’s been lost, and you’ll be able to feel it physically working, like a new layer on top of your face.
And although I’ve said ‘invest’ in a thick, quality moisturiser, you don’t always need to splash the cash. There are plenty of high quality, affordable options available on the market too.
For example, I typically use the Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser in my day-to-day routine. In winter, Simple offer a great alternative, the Replenishing Rich Moisturiser. I like to use this during the colder months and my skin thanks me for it. It’s also a part of their ‘kind to skin’ range, ideal for when the skin gets a bit more sensitive and redder.
A slightly more expensive option is the Aveeno Face Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturiser. This is another intensely nourishing moisturiser, helping to replenish the skin’s moisture barrier on those colder, harsher winter days.
Or if you were looking to invest in your winter skincare and spend a bit more money, the La Roche-Posay Nutritic Intense Rich is an option for you. I’m a big fan of this brand as I use their SPF every day, and this moisturiser is reportedly a big hit too. It’s intensely hydrating, whilst also feeling lightweight.
Use a replenishing face mask
Another change you can make to your routine, is the addition of a replenishing face mask every so often.
Some people like to use a face mask 2-3 times a week. You might find you need them less frequently, such as the days your skin could really use some TLC.
My favourite face masks to use are the Garnier sheet masks. The Garnier Sheet Masks Complete Collection offers their entire collection to choose from, so you can address your specific skin goals. A little extra pampering goes a long way when it comes to taking care of your skin over winter.
Whether you want to nourish and moisturise, or replenish dull looking skin, there’s a sheet mask for everything that comes your way this winter.
Don’t forget SPF
It can be easy to forget about using SPF in the winter. After all, if you think of skin damage, you typically think of sun burns in the heat. You don’t think about the affects it can have, even during the cold.
The reality is, SPF is an essential part of your skincare routine all year round. It’s not the heat that gets you, its the UV. And in the winter, if there’s daylight, then there’s UV.
My favourite one to use is the La Roche-Posay Invisible Fluid SPF 50+. It’s lightweight and the easy final step to use in my daily routine. But, using SPF every day has been ingrained into my daily routine now.
So if you find yourself struggling to remember, there are lots of moisturisers that includes it as a 2-in-1. This makes it easier to remember to wear every day!
Add a hydrating lip balm
No one wants sore, cracked lips during the winter! It’s painful, irritating, and just not a nice experience at all.
The face is sensitive to the cold and winds, being stripped of moisture throughout the winter months. However, the lips are extra-sensitive to this, and have no oils of their own to help replenish the moisture lost.
If you can, avoid licking your lips and focus on using a hydrating lip balm instead. I find a stick lip balm to be easier for convenience, but there are potted lip balms which can be more nourishing if you need.
But be cautious that too much lip balm can have an adverse affect. In fact, overuse can make chapped lips worse. Try to find the balance by using in the morning and in the evening, and keep one on your person if need be.
Don’t neglect your hands
When we talk about skincare, it’s easy to just think about the products we use on our face. But for many of us, the biggest issue we have regarding dryness is with our hands.
Without a doubt, throughout the winter my hands will start to feel dry and sore. The cold, wet and windy weather does no favours to help that.
A rich, replenishing hand cream is a must throughout the colder months. Throughout the day, I don’t like using hand cream because I hate how it feels touch other things with slimy hands.
But just before bed, I slather my hands in hand cream and wake up with soft skin, ready to take on the day. Whatever time you choose to use it, make sure you’re incorporating hand cream within your day-to-day routine throughout winter.
Your hands will thank you for it!
