Have you ever been interested in what a copywriter gets up to working at a digital marketing agency? Believe it or not, although the title may suggest otherwise, there’s far more to it than just writing!

My new role as a copywriter

Let’s start off with a few background details. Whilst still studying at Cardiff uni, I managed to land my current job in the digital marketing industry. Say hello to the Content Copywriter at Tide 55 Digital Marketing Agency! Although my life has changed a lot since the time I first got the job, they’ve all been positive changes. They’ve brought me to where I am today as a well-versed copywriter. Now, let’s get on to what my typical day in the life looks like.

My work day will usually start from around 8:30am to 9am, depending on whether I go into the office or not. No matter what, the morning will always be fuelled by an iced oat latte – rain or shine! It’s the best way for me to start the day. It’s also an extra incentive to buy when I head into the office.

Now, if we’re discussing a typical run down of each day, my Mondays in the office are usually filled with meetings, catch ups and preparation for the upcoming week. Don’t get me wrong, I love admin, but not everyone shares my passion… We’ll move on.

What does a copywriter do?

So what exactly do I do? Simply put – I write copy. But the term copy in itself refers to so much more. It’s more than a bit of text here and a bit of text there. In fact, there are a lot of skills that I’ve built and developed on since first getting this job, skills that encompass more than just writing! My role overall covers a greater scope than ‘writing copy’, and can be split into four key areas. These are social media, blogs, websites, and SEO (although it could be said that the latter two are within the same category).

Day-to-day I will range from working on: creating graphics and caption copy for client social media plans; researching and writing blogs/articles/PR pieces; designing and optimising websites; and working on SEO strategies. But my day also involves everything in between. This includes attending meetings, taking trips to visit clients, scheduling, content creation and making TikToks! Although I’m not the biggest fan of being on camera, it’s fun to be a part of different videos, every now and then…

Throughout the day I will be ticking things off my checklist, collaborating on shared Trellos and planning for the days and weeks to come. Again, my day ends from 4pm-5pm depending on being at home or in the office. By this point I know I’ll have had a productive day, feeling prepared and ready for the next!

Day in the life, complete.

No day is ever the same

Ultimately, I’ve been contradicting myself this entire time. The truth to this role is that I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day. It changes all the time. There’s always a different task to do, a new client to work on, a new project to help out with – but I love every minute of it.

Graduating university as a journalist means I get to bring a unique take to being a copywriter. Although it’s not the industry I had originally planned to go into, the opportunity to still write for a living is one that I am particularly grateful to have. Plus I get to have a lot of fun doing it!

So if you ever thought that a copywriter just writes copy, think again. Who knew that the day in the life of a copywriter could be so varied!
