After a recent trip to Iceland, I’m excited to share my thoughts on the innovative Blue Lagoon skincare!

The Blue Lagoon had been on my bucket list for the longest time before finally taking the plunge and visiting in December. I had been aware of the skincare, but with the iconic Icelandic setting and spa-level experience, it wasn’t initially my main goal for visiting.

With a luxurious reputation and natural benefits, I was eager to learn more about one of the 25 wonders of the world, and to experience it for myself.

After a revitalising trip, my thoughts soon changed. Now I’m quick to shout about the skincare line, as well as the setting for which they’re so well-known.

Today I’m excited to share my honest first time review of the Blue Lagoon skincare – from impressions on the day, to how my skin felt even the days after.

If you’ve been curious about the skincare line but are not sure where to start, this is my first time review!

What is the Blue Lagoon?

If you’ve never heard of the Blue Lagoon, you may be even more unsure as to what the skincare is referring to.

But to understand the benefits of the skincare line, learning about the wonder of those milky blue waters is a good place to start.

One of the 25 wonders of the world, the Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most iconic geothermal spa. Comprising the lagoon, spa, hotel, restaurants, and more, the Blue Lagoon is a brand that’s built on the benefits of its naturally occurring waters.

These waters are at the core of the benefits you experience from a visit. The Blue Lagoon’s geothermal water is made up of 70% ocean water and 30% freshwater.

The waters are not only naturally warming and relaxing, but enriched with silica, algae, and minerals, making them nourishing and revitalising too.

Whilst a lot of the healing experience can come from the waters, there are many aspects to the spa experience throughout.

From the penetrating heat of the geothermal heated sauna, to the massaging pressure from the waterfall, or the refreshing cool plunge – the visit is entirely healing to the body, and does wonders for the skin.

What’s special about Blue Lagoon skincare?

Did you know that the skincare range came before the spa retreat opened to the public?

As mentioned above, the geothermal waters at the Blue Lagoon are enriched with silica, algae, and minerals. These are also the core ingredients behind the skincare line.

In 1987, researchers confirmed that these ingredients had skin-healing properties. This led to the opening of the Blue Lagoon Research & Development Centre in 1993, and subsequently, the Blue Lagoon Medical Clinic in 1994.

The silica-rich waters started as a treatment for psoriasis at the original medical clinic. However, patients wanted to take the beneficial silica home with them to continue their treatment. That story, and the core ingredient, silica, has since transformed into a now global skincare icon.

So, the skincare line was born over 30 years ago with the iconic Silica Mud Mask created in 1995. This has quickly become an iconic symbol of Icelandic beauty.

The real, skin-healing properties is what is so special and innovative about Blue Lagoon skincare!

Reviewing the products I tried

During our visit, I had the opportunity to try the Silica Mud Mask and the Mineral Mask.

The Silica mask is complimentary for all guests, which we sampled in the image below. But we also decided to upgrade and try a second one on the day, and I’m glad we did!

As soon as you put on the Silica mask, you can feel the deep-cleansing effects. These strengthen the skin as you leave it on.

It’s recommended to leave it on for 5-10 minutes, so it’s a quick-working mask. It can be used 2-3 times a week, but if using at home, I would likely use it once a week as part of a deep cleanse.

My personal and immediate favourite of the two was the Mineral mask. My skin can get quite dry at times, which became more noticeable in the harsh Icelandic winds.

As soon as I put this mask on, I felt the moisturising effects instantly. It’s quite a thick gel texture, so your skin definitely feels intense hydration.

It’s recommended to leave this one on longer, for 10-20 minutes. I decided to let it completely soak into my skin.

You should always be careful about layering your masks. You want to be careful about counteracting the benefits of either, or overloading your skin.

But trying both these treatment masks was not only a great way to sample more of the Blue Lagoon skincare line, but with a deep cleanse followed by a rich moisturiser, it left hydrating, radiant results.

My results after use

The results of both masks were truly long-lasting. Not only did my skin feel cleansed and refreshed, but it felt deeply hydrated, which lasted all day and into the next!

We gave the skincare a proper Icelandic test, by bracing the cold conditions in the evening trying to find the Northern Lights, and then again on a very brisk Golden Circle Tour the following day. My skin felt great throughout.

I already had positive first impressions, which prompted me to buy the Mineral mask at the skincare shop onsite straight afterwards.

Those first impressions have been long-lasting back in the UK too. I’ve been especially appreciative of this, with the colder weather we’ve been having recently.

The Mineral mask has been a great addition to my skincare routine, as I wasn’t facing any serious concerns in the first place. It’s added more hydration, leaving my skin feeling dewy and glowing – I highly recommend!

Rating the overall experience

My experience of the products and the Blue Lagoon overall has been a very positive one.

I really enjoyed visiting the location and trying out all of the facilities. I particularly enjoyed the sauna, with the deep heat bringing relaxation and stress relief.

Plus, it’s not often you get to enjoy a soak in naturally healing waters, with a hydrating mask on and a glass of wine!
