Today we’re talking about self care for busy people. That means finding the time in amongst the mayhem to look after yourself, and the simple ways that can be done.

Have a think – what does your week look like? How often are you able to find the time for some personal self care?

I talk about self care a lot on this blog, because I truly value the importance of it and how it can transform our lives in small ways. However, it doesn’t hold the same value for everyone, particularly those with busy weeks and workloads.

To those people I say, you need it more than ever! These 5 ways may seem straightforward, but they’ll make all the difference in incorporating that well-needed TLC into your routine.

Why practice self care?

Firstly, what is the point? Why is it so important to find the time to spend on self care? There are so many of us out there who speak on its value and necessity, so it must be worth considering!

Self care helps you to nourish your body and mind, to revitalise and reenergise, and to help you to feel at your best. Even the small activities can have a big impact, particularly if you struggle to find the time to do so.

A busy lifestyle and stress/overwhelm often go hand in hand with one another. Consequently, dedicating time to self care ensures that we’re not showing up in negative ways towards other people.

Looking after ourselves also means that we can function from our best place, performing better in our day-to-day lives. With that thought, self care can even help you to manage the overwhelm in your busy life, bringing us full circle as to why it’s so important.

It doesn’t have to be a full day at the spa or a 2 hour meditative session, but finding time for simple self care can help you to see improvement in all aspects of your life.

Take 10 minutes to decompress

Start out by taking 10 minutes solely for yourself. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in the morning, in the evening, or the only spare 10 you’ve got during the workday.

In these 10 minutes, you want to focus on yourself completely. No distractions.

It’s so important to just take some time to breathe, even when there’s chaos and overwhelm surrounding you. Take some deep, calming breaths, to help bring you back into the present and calm the nervous system.

It may sound ridiculous, but sitting and focusing on your breathing can be game-changing for your overall state of relaxation!

Pay attention to your skin

Give your body some well-needed TLC, and enjoy the mindfulness of such a simple but effective task. There are many things you can do, to make the most of any spare time that you have.

If you’ve only got 2 minutes, then put on your favourite hand cream and indulge your hands in a lovely scented moisturiser. Or use that new tinted lip balm you’ve been saving. A small treat is still a treat.

Alternatively, if you still insist on being on the go, why not consider using a hydrating face mask at the same time? Simply pop it on and keep carrying on as you are for the next 20 minutes, taking solace in the fact that you’re still able to give yourself some of that loving care, without compromising on your busyness. (But even better still if you take the full 20 minutes off!)

Or if you manage to find some more time in the evenings, rather than spend that time mindlessly scrolling on your phone, make the effort to complete your full skincare routine. I find it an extremely therapeutic practice going through all the steps, taking care of myself through my skin.

Get your body moving

If you sit at your desk all day long, you need to get moving. Even if you work at a standing desk, you still need to get some actual movement.

Again, it doesn’t have to be a lot, or excessive. Engage in some gentle stretching, starting out from the neck all the way down to your feet, increasing blood flow throughout your body.

Have a wonder through the house, up and down the stairs, getting up and about and onto your feet.

Better still, get outside and get your body moving. If you find that one of the reasons you’re so busy is because you’re on your feet all day, getting out into the fresh air is one easy task to make being on your feet all the more worthwhile.

Whether it’s a quick 5 minute walk around the block, or soaking up some sun with gentle movement in the garden, getting up and getting moving will make you feel so much better.

Self care for busy people means making the most of those small moments, and doing what you can with them, after all!

5 simple ways to enjoy self care for busy people

Free your thoughts up

Sometimes the best thing to do is confront all of your stress and overwhelm by getting it all out of your head and written down on some paper.

You might be thinking that facing all your stresses and worries in one go is going to have an adverse affect, but I find it to be extremely freeing to just get it out of my head once and for all. Acknowledge everything for what it is, and take it from there.

If you find it’s all getting a bit much, focus on what you can control. That starts out with listing all the negative thoughts that are on your mind.

Then you can go a step further and categorise your thoughts and things to do. Consider grouping them by:

  • Biggest priority
  • The easiest task to the hardest
  • Work tasks vs personal tasks

Once you’ve got a free head space, you’d be surprised to find it makes it that little bit easier to start to tackle.

Connect with a loved one

Remember what I said about showing up in negative ways towards other people? This is so crucial to make sure you’re not neglecting those you love during the busyness of your days and weeks.

Make yourself your favourite hot drink, sit down and catch up with a loved one. That could be a quick phone call, or taking the time to invite them over and enjoying their company.

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of it – like me – we still need human connection!

It becomes especially important if you live alone or work a lot. Finding the time to connect with a family member or friend can be a needed comfort, an uplifting support, and overall, helps you to feel that all-important love. One of the best forms of self care.
