Another yearly update… But as life has been so busy, I think it’s acceptable. Today I’m going to be diving into how the graduate life has been treating me so far!
Firstly, I can’t believe that my last post was over a year ago…
But I’m not mad at myself for not posting more often. If you had read my last post, you’d understand this too. I was learning to love writing again, and I still love it now! The only difference is now I have a full time job writing for other people at a marketing agency. If I don’t write for myself all the time, or find the time to – that’s okay too.
So I’ve definitely been busy this past year! New job, new car, moving out and then moving back in… It’s been eventful.
Where does this new story begin?
You see, I would start with my graduation ceremony. But due to the repercussions from Covid, everything has been a bit backwards and hasn’t panned out the way I initially thought it would. Although I officially graduated in July 2021, I didn’t get to attend my ceremony until July 2022! So my graduate life got off to a strange start, one that didn’t feel entirely complete up until recently.
So, it would only make sense to start this post by going back to July 2021, after my Zoom graduation. Naturally, after a year and a half of Zoom university, the ultimate conclusion and worthy celebration would be online too. It was definitely underwhelming. At least I could proudly say I had graduated with Second Upper Class Honours from Cardiff University!
Not only did I graduate, but by that point in my life, I had already succeeded in finding a job in the creative industry. My official title? Social Media Content Creator. But that didn’t really encompass everything that I was doing, so I progressed on to become a Content Copywriter. This includes managing social media creation and caption copy, blog writing, research, graphic design. It was (and still is) a great opportunity and an interesting insight into the marketing industry.
It’s allowed me to focus on my ambitions as a writer and why I went to university in the first place. I love writing. To be able to create interesting blog posts for a variety of clients in a variety of industries is a rewarding feat in itself, and inspiring for my own goals as a writer. You would be surprised about how much I’ve learnt about the niches in each industry, and the strangest facts that I’ve retained from my year and a half as a copywriter.
So after the past year, that takes me up to my graduation ceremony – the fun part of graduating! The famous cap and gown, throwing the cap HSM style, celebrating with my university friends and my family, it was certainly worth the wait. My time at Cardiff University was finally complete, and even though it was probably the strangest university experience one could face, it was still a great experience nonetheless. Would I have liked to been able to go back to uni in my third year? Of course! But it didn’t happen that way, and there’s good reason for that. I navigated university in a time full of uncertainty, and came out the other side successful – what more could I want?
So where am I right now? Well, I’ve happily settled into working life – for the first time in 16 years I have no school obligations. I’m thankful to still be in that same job, learning new things every day as part of an ever-changing industry. It’s been a reassuring constant in my changing personal life.
On that note of a changing personal life, I’d like to think I’ve changed a lot as a person since the last time I’ve written on here. It’s not a bad thing either. Changes in life always happen, they are inevitable. But it’s how you deal with them that is the important part! For me, it’s okay to move out, only to have to moved back in. It’s okay that something didn’t turn out the way I thought it was going to. It brings me exciting new opportunities every day, and the chance to start fresh whenever I want. So yes, graduate life has also meant personal changes for me, but for those I am thankful as well.
Although grad life has been busy, and brought new and exciting changes, I don’t think I would have it any other way.
It just makes me excited to see what is in store for me next!
